About the brand
Coco Chanel was one of the first designers to truly elevate costume jewellery, believing that jewellery didn't have to be expensive to be glamorous. From the 1920s onwards, she famously mixed fine jewellery with imitation pearls, glass stones and gold-tone metal. In the 1930s, Chanel began collaborating with jewellery designer Fulco di Verdura, who created some of her most iconic pieces, including the famous Maltese Cross cuffs.
Chanel costume jewellery became particularly extravagant in the 1980s under Karl Lagerfeld, with oversized pearls, chains, crosses, camellias and the interlocking CC logo becoming instantly recognisable.
Today, vintage Chanel costume jewellery is highly collectible, particularly pieces from the 1980s and 1990s. Its appeal is that it was never meant to quietly blend in — Chanel jewellery was designed to make a statement.
