About the brand
Gontie is a French jewellery house with roots going back to 1890, when the Gonthiez family established a jewellery business in northern France. The company Gonthiez Frères was formally established in 1957, and the Gontie jewellery trademark was launched in 1958.
Gontie became known for beautifully made costume jewellery, often using gilt metal, enamel, glass, faux pearls and crystals, with designs ranging from elegant and refined to wonderfully bold and theatrical. The 1960s through to the 1980s produced some particularly striking pieces, including oversized brooches, statement earrings and sculptural necklaces. Gontie also had a New York presence from 1979, reflecting its international appeal.
Today, vintage Gontie is increasingly appreciated for its quality, distinctive French design and fabulous statement pieces, with signed examples particularly appealing to collectors.
