About the brand
The history of Monet jewellery began in 1927, when Russian-Jewish immigrant brothers Michael and Joseph Chernow founded the Monocraft Products Company in Providence, Rhode Island. Initially, they produced gilded monograms and decorative ornaments for handbags, before creating their first jewellery in 1929.
The Monet name first appeared on their jewellery in 1937. The brand became known for its beautifully finished gold-tone pieces, textured metals, intricate detailing and innovative plating techniques, creating the look of fine jewellery at a more accessible price.
During the 1940s–1960s, Monet became an important name in American costume jewellery. From 1969, under the ownership of General Mills, the company increasingly incorporated crystals, art glass and imitation gemstones into its designs.
Monet continued to evolve through the 1970s and 1980s, producing everything from elegant chains to bold statement pieces. In 1980, the company even collaborated with Yves Saint Laurent on a special collection.
In 2000, Monet was acquired by Liz Claiborne. Today, vintage Monet is appreciated for its quality construction, innovative metalwork and timeless designs, with earlier pieces and unusual mid-century examples particularly interesting to collectors.
